ABOUT US

VSE Career Centre

The Vancouver School of Economics (VSE) Career Centre supports Bachelor of International Economics (BIE) students with their professional and personal development while simultaneously providing the opportunity to network and connect as a means to build the foundation for a fulfilling career beyond their degree.

Our Mission and Foundations

Our Mission

Our mission is to support Bachelor of International Economics (BIE) students and first year BIE alums, utilizing a coach approach to empower them with the professional and personal development skills, critical thinking, and resources required to facilitate connections between students, alums, and key stakeholders in order to elevate their opportunities throughout their academic and professional lives.

Our Foundations

Professional & Personal Development

Career success is more than a strong resume; it’s also about self-awareness, continuous growth, and adaptability. We aim to empower and encourage students to build both personal and professional skills to thrive in an evolving workforce.

Critical Thinking

The VSE Career Centre encourages students to develop their critical thinking skills, and here at the VSE Career Centre we aim to help students carry this mindset beyond the classroom. We provide the opportunity for students to apply critical thinking to every stage of their career journey, including through career discovery, job search strategies, applications, interviewing, and negotiating job offers so BIE students can navigate complex choices with confidence and clarity.

Resource Center

Part of the journey is discovering where and how to look for relevant resources. Our self-directed Perspectives Program helps to equip you with the tools, templates, and guidance required to take control of your personal and professional development. Whether it’s through internship opportunities, job postings, events, coaching programs and appointments, application materials, and/or career insights, we strive to provide the relevant support for our students.

Network & Connecting

Studies show that 80-90% of work opportunities are found through networking and connecting. We strive to support both BIE students and alums with learning how to grow and network intentionally, whether through events, mentorship, or developing and utilizing your LinkedIn. Building community is part of building your career, and collaborating with the VSE Career Centre can help you navigate your journey.

Our Commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI)

The VSE Career Centre stands by UBC’s commitment to fostering equitable and inclusive learning and working environments in which human rights are respected, where all members of the UBC community are treated fairly and with dignity, and where the rich diversity of talented students, faculty, and staff can fully participate in the life and work of the university. The VSE Career Centre condemns violence, discrimination, or oppression of any kind against age, family status, marital status, mental and physical disabilities, race, color and place of origin, indigenous identity, sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, religion, criminal conviction, political belief and source of income. The VSE Career Centre supports an open and safe environment to have open and supportive dialogue that is necessary to thoroughly assess and respond to EDI issues. Further, the VSE Career Centre aligns with the university-wide Strategic Equity & Anti-Racism (StEAR) Framework and its vision of implementing equity and anti-racism priorities through four broad institutional domains of change – structural, curricular, compositional and interactional – and supporting change through department- and unit-level efforts that align with the Framework.
